The valve
All vacuum cleaners hoses or pipes are equipped with some sort of mechanical valve. The valve is operated by your thumb. Not many people knows the purpose of the valve and the reason for it being there. By opening the valve the suction force is regulated. If something gets stuck the suction is redirected to the valve and it is more easy to retrieve the stuck item. Since the suction force is not really affected as long as nothing is stuck it is recommended to keep it open at all times. By keeping It open you can avoid stuff from being forced down the pipe, a sock for example. It the valve is often the force is immediately redirected to the valve and therefore you can calmly unblock the pipe. By keeping the valve open it is easier to clean any are, the nozzle tend to get stuck on carpets and it gets heavier to move around the nozzle. By keeping the valve open it gets smother to operate the vacuum cleaner.
